Evaluation of Teaching
Evaluation by Management
The management has been evaluating the teachers at various stages. The quality of teaching and the success of faculty as teachers are judged with the yardstick of preventive system, a unique method formulated by Don Bosco, and adopted in this college. The teachers are given periodical training on the preventive system through talks and seminars. The Provincial, who is the chairman of the college, gives a special lecture every year to the staff on the quality of teaching, moral and ethical responsibility, accountability of the teachers etc. He also underlines the importance of maintaining a family atmosphere in the campus.
Evaluation by Students
Student evaluation of courses and teachers takes precedence over any other evaluative method. The students are given a questionnaire to be filled in. Among other things, it contains questions, which are meant to evaluate a teacher. The questionnaire is designed in such a way that the students' opinion is extracted without any prejudice. The evaluation is done about the teaching methodology of the teachers and about their efficiency to cater to the diverse needs of the students. The evaluating system of semester papers by the course teacher and another staff of the department has come in handy to assess the quality and efficiency of the teacher.
Evaluation through results
The results of semester examination also indicate the quality of the teaching-learning process that has taken place. Using the results of semester examination as indicators of the academic performance of the departments, detailed discussions are held in the meetings of the Governing Body. The views expressed by the Governing Body, which includes members from the government, and other educational institutions are seriously taken note of and conveyed to the departments concerned for enhancing the quality. The secretary and the principal hold separate interactions with the staff members department-wise to analyze and assess the performance, suggest measures for better performance and brief them about the observations made by the management for necessary follow-up action.
Evaluation by staff
The college promotes self-appraisal of teaching at least twice a year. At the end of the semester the staff are invited to assess the successes and failures of the semester. Some of the observations of the management are informed to them. The staff are exhorted to improve their performance in areas of deficiency. In particular cases, the staff members are personally advised to show improvement. Department meetings are ensured practically every month to evaluate the work done and to plan for the immediate future. Representations received from various sections, observations made by the secretary and the principal are discussed in the meetings. The proceedings of the meetings are displayed on the notice board for follow-up action. At the end of the odd semester four days of intensive exercise on introspection is given to the staff. Some books, questionnaire or materials are provided to them for self-reflection.
Self-appraisal
As per the government norms, self-appraisal of teachers is done for advancement from the cadre of Lecturer, to Lecturer (senior scale) and from Lecturer (senior scale) to Lecturer (selection grade). The Head of the Department reviews the self-appraisal and his remarks are obtained. The Principal then reviews the self-appraisal. He also records his observation. In the third level, the secretary does the appraisal .The self-appraisal forms are sent to the office of the Joint Director of collegiate education for necessary action.
